Automated Storage Management, a disk volume manager used for storing Oracle files (like datafiles, controlfiles, logfiles, RMAN backupsets, etc). ASM allows administrators to add and remove disks while the database is available. Data is automatically stripped accross all disks in a disk group, and is optionally mirrored.
