| 6-phosphofructokinase |
[EC 2.7.1.11] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate by ATP to form fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The reaction is essentially irreversible and is a committed step and a key site of regulation in the Embden-Meyerhof pathway of glucose metabolism. Numerous isozymes occur; deficiency of the muscle isoenzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, is the cause of glycogen storage disease, type VII. Called also phosphofructokinase 1.
