| 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase |
[EC 2.7.1.105] an enzyme activity that catalyzes the phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate by ATP to form fructose 2,6-bisphosphate; it occurs on the same polypeptide as the enzyme activity fructose-2,6-bisphosphate 2-phosphatase (q.v.). In liver, the two activities form part of a mechanism for regulating carbohydrate metabolism. The liver enzyme activity is inhibited via phosphorylation by cyclic-AMPdependent protein kinase, thus diminishing the rate of formation of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and slowing glycolysis. Called also phosphofructokinase 2.
