the major metabolite synthesized from cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in the liver and occurring in the serum; it is the precursor of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. See also table at cholecalciferol. Called also calcifediol, calcidiol, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3.
