| penis | <anatomy> The male organ of copulation and of urinary excretion, comprising a root, body and extremity or glans penis. The root is attached to the descending portions of the pubic bone by the crura, the latter being the extremities of the corpora cavernosa and beneath them the corpus spongiosum, through which the urethra passes. The glans is covered with mucous membrane and ensheathed by the prepuce or foreskin. The penis is homologous with the clitoris in the female. (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|---|
| penis bone | A bone of variable size and shape, located in the glans penis or glans clitoridis of all animals, except man, ungulates, elephants, whales, and a few others; it is particularly well developed in carnivora, and in the dog may reach a length of more than 10 cm; its size and shape are often a characteristic of a species. Synonym: baculum, penis bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis envy | The psychoanalytic concept in which a female envies male characteristics or capabilities, especially the possession of a penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis femineus | An obsolete term for clitoris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis lunatus | 1. Painful erection of the penis in gonorrhoea or Peyronie's disease, with curvature resulting from lack of distensibility of the corpus cavernosum urethrae. Synonym: gryposis penis, penis lunatus. 2. Ventral curvature of the penis, most apparent on erection, as seen in hypospadias due to congenital shortness of the ventral skin and, on rare occasions, in patients with a normally situated meatus. Origin: Fr. Corded (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis muliebris | An obsolete term for clitoris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis palmatus | Deficient ventral penile shaft skin which is buried in scrotum or tethered to scrotal midline by a fold or web of skin. The urethra and erectile bodies are usually normal. Synonym: penis palmatus, penoscrotal transposition. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis spines | Epithelial excrescences on the glans of the p. Of the guinea pig and cat; they are under the influence of the male hormone. Synonym: penis thorns. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis thorns | Epithelial excrescences on the glans of the p. Of the guinea pig and cat; they are under the influence of the male hormone. Synonym: penis thorns. (05 Mar 2000) |
| penis, erection of the | When the penis fills with blood and is rigid. The penis contains two chambers, called the corpora cavernosa, which run the length of the organ, are filled with spongy tissue, and surrounded by a membrane, called the tunica albuginea. The spongy tissue contains smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins, and arteries. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and ejaculate, runs along the underside of the corpora cavernosa. Erection begins with sensory and mental stimulation. Impulses from the brain and local nerves cause the muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax, allowing blood to flow in and fill the open spaces. The blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. The tunica albuginea helps to trap the blood in the corpora cavernosa, thereby sustaining erection. Erection is reversed when muscles in the penis contract, stopping the inflow of blood and opening outflow channels. (12 Dec 1998) |
| penischisis | A fissure of the penis resulting in an abnormal opening into the urethra, either above (epispadias), below (hypospadias), or to one side (paraspadias). Origin: L. Penis + G. Schisis, fissure (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria bulbi penis | A branch of the internal pudendal artery which supplies the bulb of the penis including the bulbar urethra. Synonym: arteria bulbi penis, arteria bulbi urethrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| arteria dorsalis penis | The dorsal terminal branch of the internal pudendal artery in the male. Synonym: arteria dorsalis penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteriae helicinae penis | The coiled terminal branches of the deep and dorsal arteries of the penis. Parasympathetic stimulation causes them to uncoil, allowing blood at arterial pressure to fill the cavernous tissue causing erection. Synonym: arteriae helicinae penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria profunda penis | Origin, terminal branch (with dorsal artery of penis) of the internal pudendal artery; distribution, corpus cavernosum of the penis via capillary beds and via helcine arteries and arteriovenous anastomoses to produce erection. Synonym: arteria profunda penis. (05 Mar 2000) |

| bifid penis | A rare congenital anomaly in which the penis is partly or completely duplicated; may be symmetrical, or placed one above the other; often there are associated urogenital or other anomalies; occurs when two genital tubercles develop. May also be associated with exstrophy of the urinary bladder. Synonym: bifid penis. Origin: G. Di-, two, + phallos, penis (05 Mar 2000) |
| body of penis | The free pendulous portion of the penis, consisting of shaft and glans penis. Synonym: corpus penis, scapus penis. (05 Mar 2000) |

The penis (plural penises or penes) or phallus is the external male copulatory organ, and, in mammals, the external male organ of urination. It is homologous to the female clitoris, as it develops from the same embryonic structure. The penis is capable of erection for use in copulation. The word is derived from the Latin word for the organ, "penis", which also meant "tail". ...
