It is characterised by the presence of a yellow pigment diffusely permeating the inner layers, contains the fovea centralis in its centre, and provides the best phototopic visual acuity. It is devoid of retinal blood vessels, except in its periphery, and receives nourishment from the choriocapillaris of the choroid. (12 Dec 1998) |

| acoustic maculae | Thickened areas of the saccule and utricle where the termination of the vestibular nerve occurs. (12 Dec 1998) |
| maculae acusticae | See: macula of saccule, macula of utricle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| heterotopia maculae | A condition in which one macula is displaced so that the two foveas are not at corresponding retinal points. Synonym: heterotopia maculae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neuroepithelium maculae | The specialised sensory hair cells of the epithelium of the macula sacculi and macula utriculi. Synonym: neuroepithelium maculae. (05 Mar 2000) |
