| HFH | Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia |
| hypercholesterolaemia | <biochemistry> A medical term which means that abnormally high concentrations of cholesterol are present in the bloodstream. This can lead to heart disease, hardening of the arteries, heart attacks, and strokes. An abnormal elevation of blood cholesterol. Can in some cases be caused by a defect in lipoprotein metabolism or, for example: defects in the LDL receptor (familial hypercholesterolaemia). A level of over 200 mg/dl is known to be a risk factor for heart disease. For total cholesterol: Less than 200 is desirable, 200 to 239 is considered borderline high, over 240 is considered high. Origin: Gr. Haima = blood (11 Jan 1998) |

| hypercholesterolaemia, familial | A familial disorder characterised by increased plasma concentration of cholesterol carried in low density lipoproteins (ldl) and by a deficiency in a cell surface receptor which regulates ldl degradation and cholesterol synthesis. It is frequently associated with arcus senilis and premature atherosclerosis. (12 Dec 1998) |
| familial hypercholesterolaemia | <biochemistry, cardiology> Excess of cholesterol in plasma as a result of defects in the recycling process that leads to reduced uptake of LDL (low density lipoprotein) into coated vesicles. (18 Nov 1997) |

| familial hypercholesterolaemia with hyperlipaemia | Hyperlipoproteinaemia characterised by increased plasma levels of LDL, beta-lipoproteins, pre-beta-lipoproteins, cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides; hypertriglyceridemia induced by a high carbohydrate diet, and glucose tolerance is abnormal; frequent eruptive xanthomas and atheromatosis, particularly coronary artery disease; biochemical defect lies in apolipoproteins; there are many varieties. Synonym: carbohydrate-induced hyperlipaemia, dysbetalipoproteinaemia, familial hyperbetalipoproteinaemia and hyperprebetalipoproteinaemia, familial hypercholesterolaemia with hyperlipaemia.
