hemic Of or pertaining to the blood; sanguine; brownish red.
<physiology> Haematic acid, a hypothetical acid, supposed to be formed from hemoglobin during its oxidation in the lungs, and to have the power of freeing carbonic acid from the sodium carbonate of the serum.
Origin: Gr.

hemic and immune systems The organs involved in the production and functions of the blood and the cellular and molecular components providing defense against foreign organisms or substances.
(12 Dec 1998)
hemic and lymphatic diseases Haematologic diseases and diseases of the lymphatic system collectively. Hemic diseases include disorders involving the formed elements (e.g., erythrocyte aggregation, intravascular) and chemical components (e.g., blood protein disorders); lymphatic diseases include disorders relating to lymph, lymph nodes, and lymphocytes.
(12 Dec 1998)
hemic calculus An angiolith or concretion of coagulated blood.
Synonym: hemic calculus.
(05 Mar 2000)
hemic distomiasis Disease (bilharzia) caused by digenetic trematode worms of the genus Schistosoma, the adults of which live in the urinary or mesenteric blood vessels. Eggs shed by the female worms pass to the outside in the urine or faeces, but many also lodge in and obstruct the blood flow in the liver. Eosinophils seem to be particularly important in the killing of the invasive larval stage (schistosomulum). Evasion of the host's immune response by adult schistosomes seems to involve the acquisition of a coat of host cell surface material by the parasite.
(18 Nov 1997)
hemic murmur A cardiac or vascular murmur heard in anaemic persons who have no valvular lesion, probably due to the increased blood velocity and turbulence that characterises anaemia.
(05 Mar 2000)
hemicardia <anatomy> A lateral half of the heart, either the right or left.
Origin: NL. See Hemi-, and Cardia.
Source: Websters Dictionary

hemicardia sinistra Left side of the heart.
(05 Mar 2000)
hemicarp <botany> One portion of a fruit that spontaneously divides into halves.
Origin: Hemi- + Gr. Fruit.

(01 Mar 1998)
hemicellulose <plant biology> Class of plant cell wall polysaccharide that cannot be extracted from the wall by hot water or chelating agents, but can be extracted by aqueous alkali. Includes xylan, glucuronoxylan, arabinoxylan, arabinogalactan II, glucomannan, xyloglucan and galactomannan. Part of the cell wall matrix.
(18 Nov 1997)
hemicentrum One of the two lateral halves of the body of the vertebra.
Origin: hemi-+ G. Kentron, centre

hemicephalalgia The unilateral headache characteristic of typical migraine.
Synonym: hemicrania.
Origin: hemi-+ G. Kephale, head, + algos, pain
(05 Mar 2000)
hemicephalia Congenital failure of the cerebrum to develop normally; usually the cerebellum and basal ganglia are represented at least in rudimentary form.
Synonym: partial anencephaly.
Origin: hemi-+ G. Kephale, head
(05 Mar 2000)
hemicephaly <embryology> A congenital defect where half of the brain (specifically, one side of the cerebrum, which is the largest part of the brain) does not develop in the foetus.
The cerebellum and basal ganglia may still develop somewhat.
