Synonym: helical computed tomography, helical CT, spiral CT.
(20 Jun 2000)
helicase <enzyme, molecular biology> A prokaryote enzyme that uses the hydrolysis of ATP to unwind the DNA helix at the replication fork, to allow the resulting single strands to be copied. Two molecules of ATP are required for each nucleotide pair of the duplex.
(18 Nov 1997)
helices Plural of helix.
(05 Mar 2000)
helichrysum <botany> A genus of composite plants, with shining, commonly white or yellow, or sometimes reddish, radiated involucres, which are often called "everlasting flowers."
Origin: L, the marigold, fr. Gr. A kind of plant.

Source: Websters Dictionary
(01 Mar 1998)
helicine <anatomy> Curled; spiral; helicoid; applied especially. To certain arteries of the penis.
Source: Websters Dictionary
(01 Mar 1998)
helicine arteries of the penis The coiled terminal branches of the deep and dorsal arteries of the penis. Parasympathetic stimulation causes them to uncoil, allowing blood at arterial pressure to fill the cavernous tissue causing erection.
Synonym: arteriae helicinae penis.
(05 Mar 2000)
helicis major muscle <anatomy> A narrow band of muscular fibres on the anterior border of the helix of the auricle arising from the spine and inserted at the point where the helix becomes transverse.
Synonym: musculus helicis major, large muscle of helix.
(05 Mar 2000)
helicis minor muscle <anatomy> A band of oblique fibres covering the crus of the helix of the auricle.
Synonym: musculus helicis minor, smaller muscle of helix.
(05 Mar 2000)
helicobacter A genus of gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacteria that is pathogenic and has been isolated from the intestinal tract of mammals, including humans.
(12 Dec 1998)
helicobacter infections Infections with organisms of the genus helicobacter, particularly, in humans, helicobacter pylori. The clinical manifestations are focused in the stomach, usually the gastric mucosa and antrum, and the upper duodenum. This infection plays a major role in the pathogenesis of type b gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
(12 Dec 1998)
helicobacter pylori A bacterium that has been implicated in the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers. Many gastroenterologists now advocate treating with antibiotic regimens to eradicate this microorganism in the upper gastrointestinal tract of those who suffer from recurrent or intractable peptic ulcer disease. Combinations of bismuth, metronidazole and ampicillin (or tetracycline) have been used successfully. Others advocate the use of omeprazole in combination with amoxicillin (or clarithromycin).
(27 Sep 1997)
helicobactor pylori Bacteria that cause inflammation and ulcers in the stomach.
