electro-oculography <investigation> Recording of the average amplitude of the resting potential arising between the cornea and the retina in light and dark adaptation as the eyes turn a standard distance to the right and the left.
The increase in potential with light adaptation is used to evaluate the condition of the retinal pigment epithelium.
Electrodes are placed on the skin adjacent to the eyes measure changes in standing potential between the front and back of the eyeball as the eyes move. A sensitive electrical test for detection of retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction.
(21 Jun 2000)
electro-olfactogram <investigation> An electronegative wave of potential occurring on the surface of the olfactory epithelium in response to stimulation by an odour.
Synonym: osmogram, Ottoson potential.

electro-oculogram This is a method of measuring eye activity can by placing electrodes on the face or temples near the eye and recording the electrical signals that are produced by the rotation of the eyeball. The eye itself has an electrical field around it, due to the intense metabolic activity in the retina. This field moves with the eye, and may be measured in terms of a voltage reading, which is proportional to eye movement when electrodes are placed on the skin around the eye.
