    달의 삭망주기를 한 달의 기준으로 하는 역. 일반적으로는 순태음력을 말하는 것이 아니고 태음태양력을 지적한다. 순태음력에서는 윤달을 전혀 두지 않으므로 역일과 계절이 점차 달라져서 5,6월에 눈이 오기도 하고 정월과 2월에 혹서가 되기도 하지만, 태음태양력에서는 간간이 윤달을 둠으로써 역일과 계절이 많이 어긋나지 않게 하였다. 현재 공식적으로는 음력, 즉 태음태양력이 쓰이지 않지만, 민간에서는 여전히 양력과 아울러 음력이 쓰이고 있다. 음력의 기준은 다음과 같다. ① 태양과 달과의 진황경이 같은 시각을 삭으로 한다. ② 태양의 진황경이 0°, 30°, 60°,…인 때를 중기로 한다. ③ 한국에서의 매 역일의 시작은 한국 표준시의 밤 0시부터 시작된다. ④ 합삭이 들은 날은 음력 매월 초하루로 정한다. ⑤ 중기를 가지지 않는 달을 윤달로 한다. 신라시대의 인덕력, 백제의 원가력, 고려의 선명력과 대통력, 조선시대의 시헌력 등 모두 태음태양력이다. 이런 것을 간단히 음력이라고 말한다. 과거에 한국에서는 음력만 써오다가 고종의 조칙에 의하여 1896년 1월 1일부터 태양력을 쓰게 되었다.

day 1. The time of light, or interval between one night and the next; the time between sunrise and sunset, or from dawn to darkness; hence, the light; sunshine.
2. The period of the earth's revolution on its axis. Ordinarily divided into twenty-four hours. It is measured by the interval between two successive transits of a celestial body over the same meridian, and takes a specific name from that of the body.
