| cassette mechanism | <molecular biology> Term used for genes such as the a and _ genes that determine mating type in yeast, either one or the other is active. In this gene conversion process, a double stranded nuclease makes a cut at a specific point in the MAT locus, the old gene is replaced with a copy of a silent gene from one or other flanking region and the new copy becomes active. As the process involves replacing one ready made construct with another in an active slot it is called a cassette mechanism. (18 Nov 1997) |
| cassette mutagenesis | The production of mutants within a region (often bounded by unique restriction sites) by the use of synthetic oligonucleotides that fill the gap with mutants designed into the synthetic genetic material. (05 Mar 2000) |

The compact audio cassette audio storage medium was introduced by Philips in 1963. It originally consisted of a length of magnetic tape from BASF inside a protective plastic shell. Four tracks are available on the tape, giving two stereo tracks – one for playing with the cassette inserted with its 'A' side up, and the other with the 'B' side up, thus mimicking gramophone records. ...

Cassettes are containers filled with magnetically charged tape as a means of holding information. This format has been unpopular in the video game market, but was widely adopted in the audio market and the market for cheap computer hard drive backups. The closest the cassette came to wide recognition as a viable format was during the early planning stages for the NES. The idea was canned as cassettes were believe unpractical, and the NES, as we all know, decided to employ the cartridge format.
