| Ames test |
A test developed by Bruce Ames in the early 1970s that investigates new or old environmental chemicals for carcinogenic effects. It uses the bacterium Salmonella typhimurium as a test organism for mutagenicity of compounds.

a test for mutagenicity of chemical compounds that uses special strains of Salmonella typhimurium. The bacteria are incubated on a histidine-deficient medium in the presence of the suspected mutagen and rat liver microsomal cell fraction, which contains mixed-function oxidases known to activate many procarcinogens. Growth of bacterial colonies indicates mutagenicity (reverse mutations restoring the ability to synthesize histidine have occurred). About 90–95 per cent of demonstrated mutagens are also carcinogenic.
