[EC 3.6.1.3] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP. The reaction is a result of the concerted action of proteins using ATP to drive processes such as muscle contraction, maintenance of concentration gradients, membrane transport, and regulation of ion concentrations. Called also ATPase. See also myosin ATPase, Na+,K+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase, dynein ATPase, and H+,K+-ATPase.
