an order of plantlike, flagellate protozoa (class Phytomastigophorea, subphylum Mastigophora) having green chromatophores when present; one or two, rarely more, flagella protruding from an anterior invagination; and a small stigma located anteriorly in colored forms. The organisms are usually found in fresh water, although some inhabit salt or brackish water, and a few are parasitic. See also euglenoid movement, under movement.
