case 1. An instance of disease with its attendant circumstances.
Compare: patient.
2. A box or container.
Origin: L. Casus, an occurrence
Borderline case, a patient, whose clinical findings are suggestive, but not fully convincing, of a specific diagnosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
case fatality rate The proportion of individuals contracting a disease that die of that disease.
(05 Mar 2000)
case fatality ratio The mortality rate of a disease, usually expressed per 100 cases.
(05 Mar 2000)
case management A traditional term for all the activities which a physician or other health care professional normally performs to insure the coordination of the medical services required by a patient. It also, when used in connection with managed care, covers all the activities of evaluating the patient, planning treatment, referral, and follow-up so that care is continuous and comprehensive and payment for the care is obtained.
(12 Dec 1998)
case-control study <epidemiology> A study in which the risk factors of people with a disease are compared with those without a disease.
It is an epidemiological method that begins by identifying persons with the disease or condition of interest (the cases) and compares their past history of exposure to identified or suspected risk factors with the past history of similar exposures among persons who resemble the cases but do not have the disease or condition of interest (the controls).
The relationship of an attribute to the disease can therefore be examined by comparing affected and non-affected individuals with regard to the frequency or levels of the attribute in each group.
(05 May 2002)
caseation A form of coagulation necrosis in which the necrotic tissue resembles cheese and contains a mixture of protein and fat that is absorbed very slowly; occurs particularly in tuberculosis.
See: caseous necrosis.
Synonym: tyrosis.
Origin: L. Caseus, cheese
(05 Mar 2000)
casein <protein> Group of proteins isolated from milk. _s and _ caseins are amphipathic polypeptides of around 200 amino acids with substantial hydrophobic C terminal domains that associate to give micellar polymers in divalent cation rich medium. _ casein is a glycoprotein rather different from _ and _ casein.
(18 Nov 1997)
casein hydrolysate <biochemistry> A breakdown product which occurs when casein, a protein found in milk, is broken down by enzymes or acids.
(09 Oct 1997)
casein kinase <enzyme> Cyclic AMP has no effect; aspect of protein kinase, EC 2.7.1.37; there is a separate record for casein kinase II
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.-
Synonym: casein kinase I, casein kinase ts, casein g kinase, kappa casein kinase, g-box binding factor 1 kinase, gbf1 kinase, t-antigen kinase, orb5 gene product, protein kinase ck1, protein kinase cki, casein kinase ialpha, casein kinase ibeta, casein kinase igamma, yck1 protein, yck2 protein, yck3 gene product, casein kinase 1 epsilon, casein kinase 1 delta
(26 Jun 1999)
caseinase <enzyme> See also record for caseinase c
Registry number: EC 3.4.24.-
Synonym: clostridium perfringens lambda toxin
(26 Jun 1999)
caseinate A salt of casein.
(05 Mar 2000)
caseinogen "Soluble" or kappa-casein which, when acted upon by rennin, is converted into paracasein.
(05 Mar 2000)
caseins A mixture of related phosphoproteins occurring in milk and cheese. The group is characterised as one of the most nutritive milk proteins, containing all of the common amino acids and rich in the essential ones.
(12 Dec 1998)
caseo-iodine casein iodine
caseose Nondescript term for product resulting from the hydrolysis or digestion of casein.
